On
Saturday, May 24th, 2008: Friends Across the Border did a vision-screening clinic at the Salvation Army complex
in Cathedral City, CA. We departed our staging area in Hemet at 6:00 am and Yucaipa
at 6:35 am. We arrived at the clinic location at 7:45 am and by 8:00 am the clinic
had started. We worked straight through with the last patient leaving with their
recycled eyeglasses at 3:00 pm.
Listed below is a synopsis
of the day’s clinical findings:
-
333 people were seen for the day
-
Of
the 333, 17 needed no prescription, 24 need their prescription made at the optical lab and the balance received recycled eyeglasses.
-
1 patient needs laser treatment for proliferative diabetic retinopathy in
both eyes
-
2
patients need LPI’s for narrow anterior chamber angles
-
2
patients need treatment for glaucoma
-
1
patient needs excision of a pterygium on one eye.
-
2 patients need cataract surgery on at least one eye.
After the clinic closed we packed the
equipment and eyeglasses and departed to the local Round Table Pizza Parlor for some food/suds and socialization. After a nice meal and some relaxation, we departed at 5:00 pm and arrived in Yucaipa at 6:00pm and Hemet
at 6:30pm.
It
was as long hard day but well worth the effort and greatly appreciated by those receiving our services. The Lions motto “WE SERVE” was definitely demonstrated by those involved with the clinic.
