On Saturday, July 12th, 2008: Friends Across the Border did a vision-screening clinic in Tecate, Mexico.  We departed our staging area in Yucaipa at 5:00am, Hemet at 5:45am and Menifee at 6:30am.  By 8:10am we arrived at Barrett’s Junction for breakfast.  An hour later we were off to the border, crossing at 9:30am.  The clinic started at 10:00am on schedule and ended at 3:00pm with the last patient of the day leaving with their recycled eyeglasses.

Listed below is a synopsis of the day’s clinical findings:

Ø          223 people were seen for the day.

Ø          Of the 223, 11 needed no prescription, 8 need their prescription made at the optical lab and the balance received recycled eyeglasses.

Ø          3 people need cataract surgery on at least one eye.

Ø          1 person needs laser peripheral iridotomies for narrow anterior chamber angles.

Ø          2 people need laser treatment for proliferative diabetic retinopathy in both eyes.

Ø          1 person needs laser treatment for diabetic maculopathy in one eye.

After the clinic concluded the equipment and eyeglasses were loaded into the trailer.  Then we sat down to a nice meal and socialization with the Tecate Lions.  With our bellies full and salutations said we departed for the border arriving at 4:45 pm.  By 5:00pm we had all crossed the border and were off to our fuel stop in Rancho San Diego, 30 minutes down the road.

We left Rancho at 6:25 pm and arrived in Menifee at 7:45 pm.  By 8:10pm we were in Hemet and the final stop in Yucaipa was met at 8:50pm.

It was a nice day for all involved with the clinic and we had a few new faces, which was much appreciated.
