On Saturday, August 9th, 2008:
Friends Across the Border did a vision-screening clinic in Tecate Mexico. We
departed our Yucaipa staging area at 5:00 am, Hemet at 5:45 am and Menifee at 6:30am.
By 8:10am we arrived at Barrett’s Junction for breakfast. We were
off to the border at 9:00am and crossed into Mexico 10 minutes later. The clinic
started at 9:50 am with the last patient leaving with their glasses at 2:15 pm.
Listed below is a synopsis of the day’s
clinical findings:
Ø 128 people were seen for the day.
Ø Of the 128, 3 needed no prescription, 5 need their eyeglasses made at the optical lab and the balance
received recycled eyeglasses.
Ø 2 people need laser treatment for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Ø 4 people need cataract surgery on at least one eye.
Ø 1 person needs pterygium excision on at least one eye.
With the equipment and eyeglasses loaded in
the trailer we sat down to a nice meal and socialization with the Tecate Lions Club members.
With our salutations made, we departed for the border at 4:00pm. By 4:45pm
we had made it through the crossing and pulled into Rancho San Diego at 5:15pm. After
refueling we pulled into Hemet at 7:15 pm. By 8:00pm the balance of the group
was headed home after off loading the eye equipment in Yucaipa.
