Flying Doc’s
On Saturday, November 8th, 2008: Friends Across the Border
assisted the Flying Doc’s with their participation in the Coachella Valley Health Faire, in Coachella, CA. We departed our Hemet staging area at 5:30am and Yucaipa at 6:00am.
At 7:30am we arrived at the clinic site and set up for the day’s activities.
The clinic started at 8:00am and finished with the last person of the day leaving with their recycled eyeglasses at
4:00pm. Listed below is a synopsis of the day’s clinical findings:
Ø 400 people were
seen for the day.
Ø Of the 400, 33 needed
no prescription, 15 need to be made at the optical laboratory and the balance received recycled eyeglasses.
Ø1 person needs cataract surgery on at least one eye.
Ø 3 people need excision
of a pterygium on at least one eye.
Ø 1 person needs a
6 month follow up on diabetic retinopathy.
Ø 2 people need treatment
for glaucoma.
Ø 1 person needs surgical
treatment for a retinal tear.
Ø 1 person needs surgical
treatment for strabismus.
Ø 2 people need laser
treatment for diabetic retinopathy in each eye.
With the equipment and eyeglasses packed we headed for the local Pizza Hut in Coachella for some refreshment and food. It was a nice meal and opportunity for more socialization within the group. Many thanks to those who work directly or indirectly to make these clinics a success. Friends Across the Border definitely encapsulates the concept of “WE SERVE”.
